Geek Pride Day

It has been brought to my attention that May 25 marks Geek Pride Day.   This tradition is more authentic than “May the Fourth Be With You”, with even a whole Wikipedia page on the event.   I have copied below the rights and responsibilities of geeks that Geek Pride Day seeks to promote;

Rights:

  1. The right to be even geekier.
  2. The right to not leave your house.
  3. The right to not like football or any other sport.
  4. The right to associate with other nerds.
  5. The right to have few friends (or none at all).
  6. The right to have as many geeky friends as you want.
  7. The right to be out of style.
  8. The right to be overweight and near-sighted.
  9. The right to show off your geekiness.
  10. The right to take over the world.

Responsibilities:

  1. Be a geek, no matter what.
  2. Try to be nerdier than anyone else.
  3. If there is a discussion about something geeky, you must give your opinion.
  4. To save and protect all geeky material.
  5. Do everything you can to show off geeky stuff as a “museum of geekiness.”
  6. Don’t be a generalized geek. You must specialize in something.
  7. Attend every nerdy movie on opening night and buy every geeky book before anyone else.
  8. Wait in line on every opening night. If you can go in costume or at least with a related T-shirt, all the better.
  9. Don’t waste your time on anything not related to geekdom.
  10. Try to take over the world!

Clearly, Geek Pride Day was almost designed for me.    I may not observe all of the Geek rights, being fond of a large and varied social circle, yet there is no question I live up to all of my Geek responsibilities;

1. Anyone who knows me would agree I am a geek no matter whatever anyone does to try to dissuade me from my path.

2. When I do come across a fellow Nerd, I do tend to try to outclass their knowledge on key areas, funnily enough particularly in film!!

3. I think also anyone that knows me also knows I am not shy about putting forward what I think.    Once again, take a good look at a handful of my ROTFN posts.

4.   Bride of Film Nerd and I have claimed and protected many classic movie posters, including a poster for every Star Trek and James Bond Film.   By protection we of couese mean preserving them by linen-backing and framing.

5.  My museum of geekiness is all at my parents place right now, so I cannot take images to show it all off in this post.   However, I own 650 DVDs, another 60 Blu-Rays, the afore-mentioned posters, I collect the James Bond Car Collection, and an assortment of action figures, some of which are at our current abode:

6.   I have my fair share of geeky friends… just take a look at any of our posts about Supanova or Armageddon!!

7.  I attend every movie I can on opening night, and if they are films from Marvel studios or LOTR related, my ticket is bought months in advance

8. Waiting in line in costume;

9.   I write a film blog and dress up, am I not showing off geekiness??

10. Try to take over the world??   Why else take a career working with bacteria, viruses, and parasites……
