Synopsis: Jack meets again with Angelo, now a very old man who succeeded in prolonging his life, though failed to obtain eternal youth. He has been observing Jack all the years since they last met. Rex proves his innocence to the director of the CIA, Shapiro (de Lancie). Back in the CIA fold, they are present when Angelo is the first person to die since miracle day, the cause being a null-field which interferes with the morphic field causing the phenomenon.
Once again, Miracle Day follows a brilliant episode with one that I would define as being mediocre. I was getting bored in this episode, as really, very little at all happens. The bright spark is the inclusion of John de Lancie. Though in person I found him a bit abrupt when I got his autograph at a convention, as an actor I cannot fault him. For Trekkies, it was an extra thrill to see him on-screen with DS9’s Major Kira, though this time together is brief.
In the end, the biggest shocking moment is Angelo actually dying. The solution is discovered very abruptly. Jack does try to keep it secret, true, and his reasons are very much in fitting with the original mission statement of Torchwood Three, dramatically it is interesting, but by no means exciting. There are a few end of episode surprises in store, but perhaps not enough to maintain the exciting pace established previously.
We learn of the three families in this episode also, whom appear to be the mysterious force behind Miracle Day. This is also somewhat of an anti-climax, given that the hint at the last episode was that Angelo would be able to reveal a whole lot more. Rather than prolong suspense, it was more a frustrating ploy that as an audience member almost made me feel lied too.
I have gone to town on the episode, and perhaps a little too harshly. The episode was not actually bad. It is more a case of I expected a whole lot more. Not for the first time, I suspect fewer episodes in this season would have been better. We have a single story over ten episodes, and the details may just have been sharper if they had stuck to six episodes, just as in Children of Earth. With two episodes to go, I just hope that this is the calm before the storm.
