Last week, I celebrated my 30th birthday, and for this milestone I decided against the big party, opting instead for some major geeky gifts. Here I share my horde with our readers, hopefully giving some like-minded pop-culture fanatics a few ideas for when their next birthdays roll around.
Okay, so this one was more of a gift to myself, for little other reason than the fact that I have seen this item at Gametraders Blacktown on almost every single visit I have made since their first birthday and I have wanted it badly. My Bride allowed me to purchase it last week, partly because it was my birthday, and partly because I think she was sick of hearing me talk about it. Basically, in this set there are parts to make the equivalent of three sonic screwdrivers, corresponding to the tenth and eleventh Doctors; models and a more retro look. Each of these have 4 interchangeable parts, allowing 81 combinations to personalise. The set also comes with a single battery pack, allowing one screwdriver to have both light and sound effects. I spent a whole day pretending to sonic stuff, including a stove that my Bride told me wasn’t working properly. It did not work, but it was worth a shot.
Dual Shock 3 PS3 controller
This is my other not-really-a-birthday inclusion, but the timing makes it feel like a birthday gift. I was fortunate enough to tie for first place in the Gametraders Parramatta First Birthday Cosplay Competition, winning for myself $50 store credit. I used this to contribute towards finally getting a second controller for my PS3, giving me a two-player option in future with my PS3 games. This will be particularly useful considering my next gift to be listed here.
This was a gift from my brother-in-law, a guy with great taste whom has never failed me with quality of birthday gift. He factored in my love of gaming with my love of football. The fact that this game allows you to play as A-League teams is an added bonus for Australians, and given I am a season ticket holder for Sydney FC, it will be great to play as my favourite team. Unfortunately, I had to use a cover image for this gift, as when I asked my Bride to put it in her handbag, she put it in her mother’s, meaning it went home with her rather than us. I should get a chance to insert the game into my console tonight, however.
The Savoy Cocktail Book
In the week preceding my birthday, my Bride and I went out to breakfast to catch up with Fourth Verse, and she surprised me with this gift. Having attended the last Bond Party, she knows of my love of cocktails, and of experimenting with different combinations of alcohols. There are some great ideas in here, and it is a book designed for someone willing to try more advanced cocktails. Due to a lack of ingredients, I have not had a chance to try out any of the beverages on offer here, but give me a little time and I will get started with true zeal. I am particularly keen to try some of the punch recipes I have read in here.
Autographed Doctor Who photograph
This was an item I lusted over at Supanova earlier this year, but found a little out of my price bracket. Thankfully, my parents-in-law heard of this and swooped in to the rescue. I am now the proud owner of a photograph signed by both David Tennant and Billie Piper, complete with a certificate of authenticity. It is now hanging in our current abode, and I cannot help but sit and admire it quite regularly, especially as it is now in the room where I regularly write my posts for Revenge of the Film Nerds.
Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray
I spent some time debating whether I wanted this set or not, and left my parents very confused as to what to get me for a period of time as a result. The reason for my hesitation is simple… the well documented further tinkering that Lucas has performed on the saga, especially the original trilogy. As if Hayden Christensen inserted into the end of Jedi was not enough, that horrendous Darth Vader “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO” from Revenge of the Sith has also been added to Anakin’s retribution moment when he kills the emperor. I did eventually cave however, and this graphic I found on Blastr accurately represents this process….
Of all the gifts I received this year, this was the deal-breaker when it came to having a big 30th birthday bash as well. Though on sale from Global Gear, this item was still a steep $300, and as such will be both birthday AND christmas present from my Bride this year. Frankly, I consider it an awesome deal!!
I have never before owned a sword, but this was always destined to be the sword to change that for me, if any sword could. My Lord of the Rings fanaticism is not only a matter of common knowledge to my friends, it is also something that has been well documented in this blog. More than once I have declared “Anduril, Flame of the West, Forged from the shards of Narsil”. Now I get to say it with sword in hand! It is an item of beauty… stainless steel blade inscribed with Elvish runes, gold inlay in the pommel and hilt, and the hilt wrapped with genuine leather. Though not visible in the image above, it also comes with a decorative wooden mount, which I shall place on the wall of our new house when it is built. All I can really say is, I love my wife very much!
