filmnerd007

Genres of interest: There is not a genre I do not watch, though I do have a particular interest in science fiction, fantasy, and comic book based films.   Specifically, I religiously follow the Star Trek, James Bond, Harry Potter and Marvel comics franchises.

Review style: I am a self-taught student of film, and it is due to the fact many friends turn to me for movie reviews that I am hoping to expand my audience through Film Actually.   I am rather analytical when watching films, so my review style will likely reflect that.

About me: I have no training in the arts or in journalism, this blog is more something I have wanted to do for a long time, but due to time constraints I never pursued before.   Having a team of friends to share the review burden with gives me confidence that posts will be regular for those that choose to rely on our blog.   For my “day job”, I am actually trained as a medical researcher, to date having performed research in the areas of virus and cancer research.

Favourite/random quote: “And should we win the day, today will no longer be known as an American holiday, but a day when the world declared in one voice we will not go quietly into the night!  We will not vanish without a fight! Today… we celebrate… our Independence Day” *cue crescendo*

Genres of interest: I’ll watch and try anything before discriminating and judging, but I especially love Action, Apocalypse-orientated films (including oversized/mutated animals) and Animated (with a focus on anime).

Review style: I place emphasis on the storytelling and also character development. The story has to hook people and characters believable. That being said, she does take into account that some Hollywood blockbusters do put both on the back-burner.  Technical brilliance comes later. Plot trumps massive special effects any day.

Also expect excessive use of awesome. Number of ‘awesomes’ in a review correlates with how good a film is.

About me: I am an aspiring writer who also loves to watch and appreciate anime/film. I tend to live more in her own head than in real world. I frequently revises my survival battle plan for the zombie apocalypse in her free time (as well as working on her Epic Fantasy Story)

waxingtheatrical

Genres of interest: I have been dubbed the “musicals/theatre” person.  Although it is true I do have a particular interest in all things performing arts, my taste in movies is eclectic.  So whilst I enjoy films where people burst into song and dance (High School Musical excluded), I also really like Sci Fi, Fantasy and Adventure films, quality Dramas, as well as a good Action flick brimming with awesome SFX.

Review style: I guess due to my theatre hobby, as with when I watch a performance, when I watch a movie I tend to pull apart all the different elements and comment on them individually, then pool them together to give my overall impression.  I also tend to have a lot to say about it.  So perhaps my style is “analytical rant”.

About me: I think it’s now already firmly established that I have interests in music and performing arts.  I’ve never written movie reviews on a public blog before, only for my friends. This is a bit of an experiment for me, and hopefully a lot of fun.  I say experiment because I’m actually a medical science researcher (in training).  Finally, if you don’t know who Gene Kelly is, there is something very wrong with you.

Genres of interest: comedy, animation

Review style: most likely waffle…mmm…waffles

About me: Unlike the other contributors I am not a research scientist. Instead I work in insurance. I am married to film nerd, have an extremely dry sense of humour and I most likely own the biggest comedy dvd collection anyone has ever seen.

Favourite/random quote:

Mayor: Now Drebin, I don’t want any trouble like you had on the South Side last year, that’s my policy.
Frank: Well, when I see five weirdos, dressed in togas, stabbing a man in the middle of the park in full view of a hundred people, I shoot the bastards, that’s *my* policy!
Mayor: That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of ‘Julius Caesar,’ you moron! You killed five actors! Good ones!

Urban Fantasist

Genres of interest: Give me a movie with supernatural elements and huge beasties and I am so there. That’s not to say those are the only movies I’ll see: space operas are this nerdgirl’s idea of a wet dream, mindless action flicks are the bomb and I’ll even go a romantic comedy every now and again because, contrary to popular opinion, romance is never hopeless.

Review style: Waxing Theatrical called her review style an ‘analytical rant’. I’m more for the rant. Best to call it ‘stream of consciousness’.

About me: First and foremost, Joss Whedan is a God. Know that about me and you’re pretty much sorted.

On another note, I’m a big reader of genre fiction, so there may be references to obscure urban fantasy books in my reviews but I’ll try to limit those. Not everyone reads the same books I do, even though they should!

In the real world, I’m a cancer researcher and have my own unrelated blog at C’est Moi. *cue shameless self-promotion*

Favourite/random quote: “Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!” – Wash (Alan Tudyk) voicing a Stegosaurus model in Serenity.

Genres of Interest: Like the other contributors to this page, my tastes are rather eclectic and encompassing. But if I had to pick a favourite it would be action adventure, especially fantasy and sci-fi based. This covers movies, TV shows, games, books and comics/manga.

Review Style: My bias leads me to be harsher on texts that I already love, as expectation plays a big part in my overall impression. But generally, my writing style is along the lines of a casual essay. I try to cover all relevant aspects then conclude with final judgements.

About Me: I have no official writing training, only what I developed while at tertiary education, in part to my university’s How to… Writing Assignments style guidebook. My passion comes from my love of escapism, and was initially fed by my cousin while I was growing up (you can pretty much attribute most of my tastes to his influence).

Random Quote: “Dear Varric, learn to parry. Sincerely, your innards.” – Dragon Age 2 – Varric – After being incapacitated during battle. (Not my favourite, but first to come to mind).

Genres of Interest:    I watch most genres of film. I grew up with Hollywood blockbusters (Star Wars, Terminator etc) and then as I got older broadened my film tastes to include foreign films, independent films, documentaries, anime etc. I do love film noir (Double Indemnity being my favourite) and there are certain directors who’s films I always look forward to (Tarantino, Nolan). Any dystopian film will always arouse my curiosity and I still enjoy blockbusters, as the big grin I had on my face after seeing Avengers will attest.

Review Style:    I have studied film so I tend to view movies analytically without consciously thinking about it. When I do review films I focus on a few things including but not limited to story, character, themes, director style and actor performances.

About Me:   I love cinema. It is the artistic medium I respond to most. Therefore I will take any opportunity to share my thoughts on film in person or on this blog to which I was kindly invited.

Review style: Cynical, smart-assed, to the point.

About me: Filmmaker, podcaster, pop culture commentator, avid twitter-er and all round nice guy. Former writer for Game Informer magazine, former photographer for the Tropical Fruits Organisation and current student of film. I have been around in my short but productive life. My main goal is to continue my film career and ride fame and fortune as far as it will take me… failing that, just make shitty movies to fill shelves at DVD retailers, either way, as long as I am making my movies, I don’t care. I have a real soft spot for horror flicks. I am also the writer of the feature film DEAD DOWN UNDER set for release late 2012 early 2013.

Favourite/random quote: “Smile you son-of-a-bitch!” – Chief Brody.
