Crownies Episode 12

Air Date: 22nd September 2011

Cast: Todd Lasance, Hamish Michael, Ella Scott Lynch, Andrea Demetriades, Indiana Evans, Marta Dusseldorp, Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Jeanette Cronin

Synopsis: Lena passionately pursues evidence to prove there is enough cause to prosecute a young boy for murdering his younger brother.   Tina Chang returns, wishing to testify against the man who murdered her boss and abused her afterwards.   Her state is very fragile, and she turns to Richard for moral support.   Tatum  has a case to settle a dispute between two drag queens whom have a falling out, leading to one to burn all the clothes of the other.

After saying that there was an imbalance in previous episodes between humour and drama, I have to alter my statement a little.    This week, there was a lot more humour on offer than in previous weeks.   This comes from the fun that Tatum has on her case with the combatting drag queens, as well as Richard’s increasing unease at portraying himself as gay for Connor’s sake.   Not only does he get confused by a homosexual dream, he is also later taken by Connor to a gay bar.

If anything this is more comic material than in any previous episode, yet unlike previously when I claimed this was a distraction from the drama that is the strength of the series, it was used much more effectively this week.   I suppose the real difference in the end is that the humour in this episode is actually good, with a number of laugh out loud moments.   Yet balance is still maintained, and if anything having such humour this week is absolutely necessary as the rest of the episode is quite dark.

Tina Chang’s case is a very uncomfortable one, especially concerning the level of abuse to which she was exposed, and her fractured psyche being very prominent as a result.   It is also uncomfortable to consider a young child to also be a sociopathic murderer.   This case, which was initiated last week, has further layers, with the child’s own father raising doubts about the child, and revelations that this boy had a slave gang he terrorised at school are nothing if not shocking.   Yet the case remains difficult… that is until Lena finds the evidence that this young boy’s remorse is far from genuine.

I have made it clear that Crownies was starting to get flabby around the middle, but episodes like this one go a long way to restore my faith.   I certainly hope the series continues on such strong ground.
