As promised, this is the first of numerous posts reporting on Heroes and Villains. I will be meeting with my fantastic camera crews over the next few days (video: Scott Sowter and Shannon Smith; Stills Troy Spears) to put together the cosplay galleries, as well as to get copies of the interviews that I had with Amber Benson and Frazer Hines. I will include my more amateurish photos here for now until I get the higher quality images from my colleague Troy. This gallery is available at the end of the post.
After all the anticipation, Heroes and Villains is now over, and was a great success!!
Revenge of the Film Nerds was there for the entire event, from the cocktail party on Friday evening to the cosplay comp this afternoon. We are still on assessment hiatus for the next 24 hours, so this will only be a quick post. However, over the next few days we will bring you a selection of highlights. These will include;
- Reports on panels and events from each day
- Cosplay galleries
- Interviews with Frazer Hines and Amber Benson
- Highlights of some of the exhibitors that were present
- Promotion of other pop culture enthusiast groups that we met over the weekend, including our Mosaic Magazine, the podcast Women Talk Sci Fi,, and Comic Web Series Crimson Rose.
We extend a huge thank you to Culture Shock Events for granting us almost unlimited access to this event, so that we can share all these wonderful stories with you. We also must thank both Scott Sowter, RotFN writer and manager of Problem Child production, for filming our interviews this weekend, and Troy Spears for his additional photography.
I am a big fanboy, so I end this post with one of my two favourite photos from this weekend….
On Sunday, Revenge of the Film Nerds had a blast at the second birthday of our favourite store. There was a TARDIS, Storm Troopers, Umbrella Corp, and Neo even popped in for a visit!! Lots of new and old customers attended the festivities, and many a photo was snapped. It was an awesome day, and here is looking forward to next year’s celebrations. The event was over all too quickly!!
Anyone who visits this site regularly knows that we love one store more than any other. We first visited Gametraders Blacktown a year ago for their first birthday celebrations and had a wild time, as can be seen by the links here;
Next weekend Gametraders Blacktown celebrates their second birthday. There will be competitions, Stormtroopers, cosplay, and a lot of fun in general. So help Revenge of the Film Nerds celebrate a year of spending way to much money and come along!!
Sunday far surpassed Saturday, a large part of this likely being due to the rain keeping away today, so not everyone was confined to the interior of The Dome. Once again, there was a lot of fantastic cosplay, some of which will be shown here, and some in our contributor Fourth Verse’s post, which we expect to be posted tomorrow night. After the cosplay pics, we have a video of an interview with our friends at Culture Shock Events, whom had a stall at this year’s Supanova. I urge you to check it out, as we have been given 4 double passes to next weekend’s OzTrek 8, featuring Jeri “7 of 9” Ryan. Following the video will be the competition details for your chance to win one of these prizes!
Anyway, without further preamble, on to the cosplay!
As per usual, it is with the Saturday session that the Supanova expo really ramped up into full swing. There were many great and interesting stalls, a few of which I hope to spend more time exploring tomorrow. I barely had the opportunity to scan the artist’s alley in any great detail. I am sure most readers are here though to see some cosplay pics, of which I have taken many. Following those, I will report on the panels I attended (Mercedes McNab, Natalia Tena, Tricia Helfer) before finishing the post with some of my general thoughts of the day.
Also, don’t forget to check out my report on the preview night, featuring more great examples of fantastic cosplay.
Another fun day at Gametraders, with their most recent cosplay event in full swing. Staff and customers alike dressed as their favorite anime and pop culture icons. Publicity was running amok too, with old and new friends dedicated to the spread of geek culture meeting and swapping details. In this respect, I give a shout out to Problem Child Productions, Project Ouroboros and Duchess Sakura Cosplay!
Today at Gametraders Blacktown, there was another of the increasingly regular cosplay competitions. There were some great entries, and I am excited to share them here with you all. The best male and female costumes will each win a copy of Naruto Shippuden Collection 8, which is due in store later this week. Results will be announced on the Gametraders Blacktown facebook page when the winners have been decided.
Note, the photos below are also available on the Gametraders facebook page. I was the only one there with a camera!!
I was having a good chat with the gentlemen from the Umbrella Corp, and learned they are part of a much larger Resident Evil Cosplay group, Project Ouroboros. They have both a website and a facebook page that interested parties can view, so click the links and check them out.
I was having a chat with Candice, whom is dressed as Baby Doll from Sucker Punch above. She is really keen on her cosplay, and even has her own Cosplay Fanpage on Facebook, where she shares images of the costumes she has made and gives advice on how to make your own. I have checked it out and it is definitely well worth a browse!!
It was a great day with fun to be had by all entrants and customers. The cosplay events always get some great costumes coming through the front door, and I look forward to seeing what people come up with next time!!
As can be seen above, there are quite a few new games that have become available today at Gametraders Blacktown. The anticipated Metal Gear Solid HD collection is now available for both the PS3 nad for the 360. Tennis fans can rejoice with the latest Grand Slam title available, with good ol’ John McEnroe gracing the cover. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a new RPG game that is getting some pretty nice reviews, so definitely worth a look. Finally, for the 360, there is Never Dead also available. I will admit ignorance of this game, but I said the same of Skyrim when it came out. Here I am, 50 achievements later….
