It is with heavy heart that I have read that Mary Tamm, who was the first person to play companion Romana in Doctor Who, has passed at the age of 62 after an 18 month battle with cancer.
The character of Romana was introduced during the reign of Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, in the show’s 16th season. She left at the end of this season, but as her character was a Time Lord, she regenerated into Romana’s second self, played by Lalla Ward.
Her loss is sad news, especially in a period of 18 months which has also seen the loss of other Doctor Who legends, Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen. She leaves behind a husband, daughter and grandson. Our thoughts are with them.
Sunday far surpassed Saturday, a large part of this likely being due to the rain keeping away today, so not everyone was confined to the interior of The Dome. Once again, there was a lot of fantastic cosplay, some of which will be shown here, and some in our contributor Fourth Verse’s post, which we expect to be posted tomorrow night. After the cosplay pics, we have a video of an interview with our friends at Culture Shock Events, whom had a stall at this year’s Supanova. I urge you to check it out, as we have been given 4 double passes to next weekend’s OzTrek 8, featuring Jeri “7 of 9” Ryan. Following the video will be the competition details for your chance to win one of these prizes!
Anyway, without further preamble, on to the cosplay!
Tonight was the biggest preview night I have attended for Supanova, with the lines far exceeding anything I have already seen in my experience of the two years previous to this. I wandered the line, taking some great cosplay shots. Upon entry, I attended the opening ceremony and a panel with the M aster to Paul McGann’s Doctor… Eric Roberts. I will comment on these later in this post, but first lets look at the cosplay. There were some fantastic costumes tonight, and I look forward to viewing many more tomorrow!!
Another fun day at Gametraders, with their most recent cosplay event in full swing. Staff and customers alike dressed as their favorite anime and pop culture icons. Publicity was running amok too, with old and new friends dedicated to the spread of geek culture meeting and swapping details. In this respect, I give a shout out to Problem Child Productions, Project Ouroboros and Duchess Sakura Cosplay!
As a result of a distraction provided by my studies, I have been a bit lax about supporting my favorite store. A visit last night shows me that Gametraders Blacktown is still number one when it comes to getting me to draw my wallet out of my pocket… way too regularly!!
Adrian would like readers to be aware of the cosplay comp that will be on this coming Sunday. The event is to celebrate the release of Naruto Shippuden volume 9…
The prize is fantastic, with $50 in store credit going to both the best dressed male and the best dressed female on the day. Look out for the tenth Doctor when you come down!!
Games in this month…
There are a lot of games that have been added to the shelves since my last visit, and many of them have caught my eye. I know very little about Dragon’s Dogma, but given it is dragon based, it may just be my next purchase….
It was that time this week when Gametraders Blacktown got a cornucopia of new anime stock in, including the long-awaited Collection 12 of Bleach. I could have taken many more photos, but there would have been no room in this post to share with you all what other goodies have arrived in store.
Easily the biggest release this week was Mass Effect 3. The trailers for this game have been absolutely awe-inducing, not that they were really needed for those whom were already fans of the franchise. I have not yet picked up my copy, as some of you may have realised that my review of Mass Effect 2 is not yet up, indicating I haven’t finished it. After all, I need to import my saved character!! For those that do not already have a model of the Normandy as well, Gametraders Blacktown is doing a bundle where you can get the game and the model for a total of $119.95!
The popular mobile phone game phenomenon has now hit your PC with the version you can see above. Seriously, it was only a matter of time… now you can play the game on a big screen and really see those pigs get what is coming to them.
Skylanders for 3DS
Like everywhere else in the country, Gametraders Blacktown is still waiting for new stock of Skylanders figurines (ETA January 25). Until then though, they have managed to get new stock of 3DS and 360 starter packs, for those that have not yet been initiated into the craze. So come on in before these too disappear.
This is the last Great Treasures at Gametraders post prior to Christmas… so it might just be the place to look for those last-minute Christmas gift ideas!
Replica James Bond Walther PPK
There are five primary franchises that I really hold dear. Previously, the main ones for which Gametraders has catered towards for me is The Lord of the Rings, with the delightfully sculpted blades from these films in the weapons cabinet, and of course their wide range of Doctor Who merchandise. They now cater towards the second of these, with this beautiful framed replica of James Bond’s Walther PPK. Upon my reaction, I was told that rarely can a grown man be seen to react in such a way. I picked one up immediately!! Now all we need is some Star Trek and Harry Potter merchandise, and I would never leave the store!
Last week, Gametraders Blacktown got in some lovely new replica weapons in from Global Gear. As can be seen above, we got some lovely hand-made Katanas, masonic style swords, and we even got The Bride’s blades from Kill Bill. Not pictures here but also worth having a look at from Global Gear are some impressive bronzed statuettes of Aliens versing Predators!
