Film Nerd’s Choice: Catwoman
Cast: Halle Berry, Benjamin Bratt, Sharon Stone
Synopsis: A reimagining of the Catwoman myth that has few if any redeeming features
Perhaps it is unfair to declare someone my least favourite director on the basis of a single film of his that I have seen. It appears however that I am not alone in this assessment. This film effectively killed the fledgling directing career of the former visual effects supervisor, with his only credit after this film being a TV movie which he directed under his Christian name.
I commented on my post for Sour Grapes that most films, with the exception of that one, I find some redeeming feature in. Simply put, what I find the redeeming feature in this film will not be shared by many. Halle Berry’s costume. I fully admit that it is the mere parody of a costume and has little functional or practical elements to it. But Berry looks damn hot wearing it, and tha is the sole reason I saw the film through to the end credits.
The rest of the film is a steaming turd. The acting is sub-par, and knowing that some of the cast can act to some extent indicates that rather these stars were poorly directed, in my book. The convoluted plot lines trying to evoke a “history of Catwomen” stank too much like a rip off of “in every generation, there is a Slayer”. Then when you roll both those elements with some of the worst one liners in cinematic history (“I’ll have a White Russian, hold the vodka, hold the Kahlua”), there is no surprise that this film was a darling with the Razzies.
Seriously, don’t waste your time.
1 star out of 5 (and that is just for the costume).
